The assessor plays an important role in the certification process of a Fundamentals Coach. Review the Assessor Guide for details of this role.
Once coaches have completed their training and their post-training portfolio tasks, an assessor is identified by the coach. The assessor is notified by email when the coach submits their portfolio tasks. The assessment process has four key steps:
- Review portfolio tasks
The assessor will begin with a review of the tasks submitted by the coach for the Fundamentals Coach Portfolio.
Links to these documents are included in an assessor email you will received when the coach has submitted their portfolio tasks. The assessor will review and discuss the tasks with the coach. Coaches are encouraged to use the feedback from this discussion to improve the tasks before the final versions are submitted. - In-person observation
Certification in NCCP requires an in-person observation of the coach. For Fundamentals Coach, this observation takes place in a practice setting, with the coach delivering a full practice to their regular group of swimmers. - Debrief Meeting
Once the in-person observation is complete, the assessor and coach should schedule a time to meet and discuss your overall impressions, and next steps for the coach's professional development. - Submit Final Assessment
When steps 1 – 3 are complete, the assessor will compile final versions of the Portfolio tasks and notes from the in-person observation and debrief meetings. These items will be submitted using the Fundamentals Coach Final Assessment form – the link to this form is found in the email you received with the original coach portfolio tasks and this document.
